Kansas State Fair in trouble
The Kansas State Fair is a seminal event in the states annual calendar. Since 1903 Hutchinson has hosted what the state legislature initially recognized as the Central Kansas Fair and it quickly grew to become a center for investment, advertising and community engagement. But, financial problems brought on by the recession and much-needed upgrades to State Fair infrastructure, are creating a disconnect between the state legislature and the fair association.
The State Fair typically runs for ten days from the first Friday after Labor Day, last year over 300,000 people attended the fair from all of the state’s 105 counties. There are four main aspects to the fair, areas of life to which it contributes: in terms of commerce, the fair is extremely important to the state, with a captive audience numbering hundreds of thousands, companies are able to take advantage of over 1000 commercial stands to exhibit and sell their product.
